Amorgos the easternmost island of the Cyclades is 136 miles
away from the port of Piraeus. The area of Amorgos is in total 121km² with a
126km coastline. Mount Kroukellos has the highest altitude, 823 meters from the
sea surface. The topography of the island is not suitable for the development of
a modern road network, nevertheless, a multitude of the paths leads to places of
historical significance, cultural heritage picturesque chapels and unique
beaches.
Chora, Aigiali and Katapola are the three largest towns of the island which have
the largest population concentration. Other popular sites are Tholaria, Lagkada,
Stroumbos and Potamos, all situated around Aegiali. Xilokeratidi, Rachidi, Pera
Rachidi in Katapola. Vroutsis, Arkesini, Distrata, Kolofana, and Kallotaritisa
in Kato Meria. All of them authentic welcoming traditional have high quality
food are ideal for walks and eventually they take you back in time.
The ancient ruins of Aegiali, situated close to Tholaria are a must see for
every visitor and so are the Monastery of Aghios Ioannis Theologos, the small
church of Stavros and the old mine at the north. Moreover, the castle of Rihti,
the medieval Castle with the Venetian Tower and the historical Secondary school
of Amorgos — the first secondary school which was founded in Grecce (after the
Greek Revolution of 1821).
Aegiali the biggest sand beach of Amorgos leads to Levrossos, Psili Ammos and
Chochlakas through either a pedestrian path or by boat. In the north eastern
side of the island lay the virgin beaches of Mikri and Megali Vlychada. In the
north-western side of the island below Kroukelos there are Sparti Bay and
Halara. Further south on the way to Chora lies the beach of Aghios Pavlos where
you can take a small boat to the beaches of Nikouria island.
On the Gulf of Katapola there are Kato Krotiri, the beach of Synodinos, Maltezi
and Plakes. In the south-west side we find the beach of Paradisia and Kato
Kambos. Last in the south of Amorgos are the beaches of Mouros, Ammoudi,
Kalotaritisa and those of Grambrousa island which can be reached by boat.
